The Independent Consultant's Manifesto
The “Technology as a Lever” philosophy
Paweł Lipowczan
Business Solutions Architect | AI and Process Automation
Who I am, and why it matters
For more than 17 years I have built systems: complex .NET applications and SQL databases, Python solutions, and modern low-code platforms and AI integrations. I have led more than 100 projects for more than 50 clients.
Now, as an independent consultant, I do more than implement technology. I design systems that create measurable business value.
Everyone talks about AI, automation and digital transformation. In all that noise, the most valuable thing I offer is restraint and pragmatism. I am not here to sell you the latest tool. I am here to solve your problem.
Five principles
1. The problem before the solution
Technology is not a goal in itself.
I don't automate for the sake of innovation. Every line of code, every automation scenario and every AI integration has to earn its place in your profit and loss account.
If a problem can be solved by changing a habit, a simple checklist or a reorganised process, that is what I recommend, even if it means no IT project at all.
Technology is a tool for reaching a business goal, not the goal.
2. Measuring the unmeasurable
I don't accept that some parts of a business can't be measured.
What you call “peace of mind”, “an orderly organisation” or “reliable processes” is, in practice:
- Lower operational risk
- Management attention won back
- Hidden costs removed (errors, delays, repetitive work)
I can translate every “soft” benefit into financial and risk metrics.
3. No favourite technology
I am not a believer in any one platform.
I choose the tools, from Python and SQL to no-code solutions, so as to:
- Keep technical debt to a minimum
- Avoid dependence on a single vendor
- Match your digital maturity
- Ensure scalability and security
My job is to choose the best tool for your problem, not the newest tool on the market.
4. Partnership through transparency
You don't need to understand how the engine works, but you do need to feel confident at the wheel.
I set out to take the mystery out of AI and automation. Along with the systems, I deliver:
- An understanding of how they work, to the level needed to run them
- The skills to develop them further
- Independence from outside suppliers
I build systems you control, not systems that control you.
5. Evolution, not revolution
I introduce change iteratively.
Instead of implementations that take months and switch everything on at once, I aim for small, fast results:
- The first result visible in weeks, not months
- Each stage paid for by the savings of the one before
- Minimal investment risk
- Room to check and correct course
Your system grows with your needs and with your trust in it.
How I price my work
I first estimate every project in hours. That estimate sets a fixed price for the agreed scope. The offer shows you that price, not the number of hours.
In a long, ongoing engagement developing a system, we move to billing for time and materials: the hours actually worked, and the tools and services I pay for with your agreement. Under a fixed price every change of scope turns into a negotiation, and in an ongoing engagement the scope changes all the time. Maintaining a system once it runs is a separate, fixed monthly fee, described below.
AI consulting is billed by the hour, at €75 net per hour. The details are set out in the Terms of Cooperation.
All prices are net of VAT. VAT is charged under EU rules, and a company in another EU country is invoiced under the reverse charge.
What it means for working together
Shared responsibility for the result
I am not a technical subcontractor. I am a strategic partner. That means:
- Honesty: if I see that a project makes no business sense, I will say so plainly
- Initiative: I don't wait for instructions, I propose solutions
- Teaching: I pass on knowledge rather than create dependence
- Measurement: we define the KPIs together and track progress against them
Long-term support: peace of mind that pays
After an implementation I offer ongoing technical support and maintenance for a fixed monthly fee. The arrangement pays off for both sides:
For you, it means:
- Peace of mind: you know someone is watching over your critical systems
- Priority: your requests are handled first
- Continuity: the system evolves with your needs
- Predictable costs: a fixed monthly fee
For me, it means:
- An extra reason to build reliable systems
- A shared interest: I earn when the system works
- Steady income that lets me plan better
My commitment to you
As your consultant, I commit to:
Listening first, proposing second: every company works differently, so there are no one-size-fits-all solutions
Transparency in every part of our work: from the price, through the process, to the source code
Getting the most out of your ROI: every design decision is made with the return on investment in mind
Building your independence: my job is to make sure you won't need me in future
Intellectual honesty: if there is a better solution than the one I can deliver, I will tell you about it
Who this way of working suits
This philosophy works best with companies that:
- Treat technology as a business tool, not a toy
- Look for a partnership, not a subcontractor
- Want to measure results, not activity
- Are ready to invest in real solutions, not quick patches
- Value transparency and candour over polished presentations
If that sounds like your company, let's talk.
A 30-minute call on Google Meet. The calendar opens in a new tab, and the nearest free slots are usually within a few working days.
Technology is a lever. Let me help you find the point to push from.
